Commercial & Residential Asphalt Paving

Serving Northeastern Wisconsin

Asphalt is a sustainable building material primarily used in the construction of roads, parking lots, and paved surfaces. It is more affordable regarding up front costs, is visually appealing, and is more easily recycled and repaired than concrete. Your driveway or parking lot is one of the first things people will notice about your property, and we can help ensure you make a good first impression!!

When pavement deteriorates due to lack of maintenance, it can often seem like it’s at the end of its lifespan. We offer multiple options for refinishing or repairing existing asphalt with every budget in mind. These options include crack filling, sealcoating, minor patch repair, larger cut out repairs, overlays, and complete excavation and re-installation.

Our paving equipment, office technology, and crew training guidelines are frequently updated in order to provide the highest quality workmanship and customer service to our clients. We take great pride in maintaining all existing equipment in order to assure optimum safety standards and keep customer expenses low. No asphalt paving job is too big or small for our team of experienced professionals at Martiny Paving!

The installation of a new driveway or parking lot is a substantial financial investment, so you should expect nothing but the best quality from the contractor you choose. Potential clients should do thorough research regarding material usage, customer service, and pricing methods. We at Martiny Paving pride ourselves on using only commercial grade material and putting an emphasis on customer service and education. Some contractors take shortcuts by use lesser materials, applying thinner asphalt than recommended, or simply low-ball bids to gain contracts with no intention of maintaining integrity. Properly installed asphalt can either be a positive investment or an ongoing expense if done incorrectly.

What is Asphalt?

Asphalt is made by combining course and medium diameter aggregate (i.e. crushed rocks, sand, gravel, etc,) material with a black sticky black petroleum binding agent. This mixture is applied over multiple base layers, in varying degrees of thickness based on project specifications.

Types of Asphalt:

There are five types of asphalt categorized by the type of aggregate, which also determines the structure and strength of the pavement surface. At this time Martiny Paving utilizes commercial grade Hot Mix asphalt for all paving installations and major repairs. Cold Patch is available as an alternative temporary low cost material if requested for repair work.

Hot Asphalt: A permanent paving and patching solution that is manufactured and applied at temperatures between 270°F and 325°F to maintain pliability before the asphalt cools and becomes unworkable.

Cold Mix/Cold Patch: A temporary (2-4 year lifespan) asphalt compound applied without adding heat. Covers basic patching and repair needs i.e small potholes in low traffic areas.

Process:

Step 1: Base and Grading

First, we evaluate the base, and then apply an appropriate amount of crushed stone in layers. The proper installation of this base of material beneath the asphalt provides the foundation for the overall structure. This layer is comprised of course diameter material laid over the sub base (excavated dirt), which provides a stable surface to support new pavement. This product was designed to compact very well, and be applied at the proper pitch to allow for sufficient water drainage. The base is then rolled with a vibrating roller to ensure proper compaction. Creating a strong flat base is important to maintain a long lasting surface.

Step 2: Binder and Surface Layer

Slightly smaller diameter stone aggregate mixed with oil to increase the strength and durability of the eventual pavement structure.

Step 3: Laying of Asphalt.

Once the surface is properly prepared, Martiny Paving brings in commercial grade asphalt material. This final step consists of a 2-3 inch layer of small aggregate asphalt mixture to provide a smooth ride and complete the jet-black aesthetic of the pavement surface. When available we utilize heated trucks to maintain optimum asphalt temperature. In some cases, the asphalt is laid in two levels (called lifts).

Step 4: Compaction and Finish

This is a crucial step in asphalt paving. Without proper compaction, the asphalt structure will not hold together throughout its life. Upon laying the asphalt (as with the base material) the surface is rolled with a vibrating roller for a smooth, strong finish. Edges are tamped at a 45° angle to provide additional strength and weight bearing attributes.

Types of Repair Available:

Infrared Heating and Patching –

Cutout, removal, and replacement of moderate to large sections –

Full Removal and re-Installation – Asphalt Overlay

With an asphalt overlay, you may be able to get more out of your asphalt than you thought possible. An overlay adds new life to older asphalt, repairing minor flaws in the existing surface and adding a new layer of pavement to the top surface. Before overlay paving begins, we can repair any current severe damage in your existing surface and remove any loose material or water from the surface. After initial prep, we apply a new layer of asphalt over the existing pavement. And as always we compact and smooth the project for optimum strength, safety, and attractiveness. Resurfacing using the Overlay method offers a lower cost alternative to a full removal and replacement, as well as having a shorter completion timeline. An overlay will  ultimately give your surface the look of brand-new asphalt adding up to 15 years to your pavements total life.

I had them seal my driveway in 2021 and i am still happy with their work. They were great to work with. Answered all my questions, went over the process, and were very prompt. The person who came to the door (not the owner) before they started was very professional. You can tell they take pride in their work.

Brent was phenomenal to work with! he was honest about every step of the process. we had our old asphalt driveway removed and they installed a new driveway as we had to add onto our original driveway that was over 20 years old. I highly recommend Martiny Paving, they care about quality work and, as a customer, that we were satisfied. Look forward to using them for our future sealcoating needs as well!

Spoke to Brent initially and he took the time to explain in great, professional detail what he believed was the best path moving forward for our old driveway.Received a call from Beth indicating they could fit us in a month earlier than the quoted date. Unfortunately we happened to be out of town for the 4th of July holiday and couldn't get the camper out of the driveway in time for them to come early.Received a second call from Beth and was right when they told me on the quote they would be there to seal the driveway.Received a call from Bryce just before arrival indicating that we were still on schedule as planned and to make sure the driveway was clear of any objects, cars, campers....If professionalism, knowledgeable staff, prompt service, fair price, and excellent communication from a company is what you are looking for, Martiny Paving is the only call you need to make.We are extremely pleased with the end result!Thank you Martiny Paving for making this a great experience!

Brent, Bryce, and the crew patched a few potholes and seal coated a (30) car commercial parking lot for me in downtown Green Bay. Excellent communication start to finish.
